Ni-Mn-Ga: a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy

Dr. Sudipta Roy Barman

UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientic Research, Indore

Ni-Mn-Ga is a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy with highest known magnetic eld

induced strain of 10% that is much larger than the leading magnetostrictive material,

Terfenol-D (0:24% strain). The shape memory effect can be driven by the magnetic

eld in Ni-Mn-Ga, which is faster and more efcient than temperature or stress driven

shape memory effect. Ni-Mn-Ga exhibits interesting changes in its properties as function

of temperature and composition. In order to understand these, we have studied its

structural, magnetic, transport, and electronic properties in collaboration with different

research groups in the country. Ab-initio density functional theory based calculations

have been performed to augment the experimental results. In this talk, our recent ndings

on crystal structure, phase diagram, magneto-transport and electronic structure of

Ni-Mn-Ga will be discussed.

Date and time: 28th November, 4:00pm

Place: LH1, SNBCBS

All are cordially invited to attend the talk
