Theme and aim: Statistical mechanics is a branch of physics, which bridges the microscopic
and macroscopic
world and provides a tool for understanding macroscopic properties of matter in terms of
underlying microscopic dynamics. Systems of current interest, such as soft, active, and
biological matters, possess rich static and dynamical structures concerning steady-state as well
as transient phenomena observed in nature. They are not just useful pedagogically, but also
have applications in a range of contexts related to both technology and science. These domains
of science have been pursued vigorously by a section of statistical physicists located in and
around Kolkata. In this discussion meeting, we intend to highlight current research endeavours
in the broad area of statistical mechanics going on in and around Kolkata, as well as to acquaint
young researchers to these rapidly developing fields that are at the forefront of contemporary
research.
