Background

Besides his scientific attributes, Prof. Bose had a progressive mind compared to his time. In particular, he was sensitive to issues like gender diversity. Purnima Sinha, a promising Physics student at Calcutta University, joined her Ph.D. program in Prof. Bose's group. Purnima Sinha was the only woman in this group. Sophisticated instruments were built under Prof. Bose’s active guidance. Purnima Sinha’s Ph.D. work involved analyzing clay from all over India. She was awarded the PhD degree in 1956 - "the first Indian woman to earn a PhD degree in Physics from an Indian university."

Purnima Sinha succeeded in leaving her indelible imprint in a male-dominated world, largely because of the persistent guidance and encouragement she received from Prof. Bose. Thus, in this centenary year of Bose-Einstein Statistics, it becomes relevant to celebrate the contribution of women in quantum science. Even though women in science have earned firm ground under their feet today, their path has not been easy. The three-day conference “Women in Quantum Science” will bring under focus the challenges and achievements of the women scientists and their path-breaking work in modern day quantum science.

Topics

This conference will be dedicated to women in quantum science and will comprise talks from women scientists in the broad areas of quantum science and technologies. The talks will be in three categories:

  • Role model speakers
  • Young women scientists
  • Talks on gender diversity
  • In addition, there will be a couple of panel discussions. The panelist will consist of men and women scientists and will cover the following topics:

  • Challenges faced by women in higher education and ways to overcome them
  • Opportunities for women with a focus on quantum science and technologies.
