Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

Working Principles

Atomic force microscopy is  the most versatile and powerful microscopy technology for studying samples at nanoscale. It is versatile because an atomic force microscope can not only image in three-dimensional topography, but it also provides various types of surface measurements. It is powerful because an AFM can generate images at atomic resolution with angstrom scale resolution height information, with minimum sample preparation.

Diagram of atomic force microscope (AFM) system showing feedback control loop with photodiode detection and cantilever-sample interaction.

To obtain an image, a cantilever is scanned over the sample surface. A laser beam is deflected off the back of the cantilever, and changes in deflection are monitored with a photodiode detector.

Applications

Material Science, Condensed matter physics, Nano Science & Nanotechnology, Biological/Chemical Sciences
